Description
Summary:Soft law documents play a signifi cant role in international environmental law, especially under United Nations’ auspices. This study aims to describe these instruments in a chronological view. To understand the defi ning features of these documents, the conceptual defi nition of soft law is essential. This analysis is based on doctrinal literature. After this, the study examines the prior history of the determining soft law document – the Millennium Development Goals, the outcome documents of the Johannesburg Summit and the ‘Rio+20’ Summit, and the Sustainable Development Goals –of the last 25 years. Besides examining the authoritative text of all these documents, the study place particular emphasis on their evaluation and the connection between them, especially the synergies and antonyms of the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. The analysis shows a progressive and improving practice, we can conclude that on the one hand, these signifi cant documents retain their original approaches, but on the other hand, they are continuously evolving, regarding the actual challenges and the evaluation of the previous documents.
